"Against the Sky" (Kat Martin) ★★★.5

BOOK SUMMARY

ALASKA In America's last wilderness there are no limits to what a man can do.
For detective Nick Brodie, that means keeping the perps off the streets of Anchorage 24/7. Nick has never backed down from danger, but after the horrors he's seen, he's definitely in need of a break.
Samantha Hollis never thought she'd meet anyone like Nick, especially in a place like Las Vegas. But after one reckless, passionate night, she discovers the charismatic stranger is everything she wants in a man. But can he ever be anything more than a one-night stand?
When Nick invites her to Alaska, Samantha decides to find out, never guessing the depths she'll discover in him or the tangle of murder, kidnapping, and danger about to engulf them both. . .

CAT'S REVIEW
"Against the Sky" by Kat Martin. This is the second book of the series. However, I have not read the first and had no problem following and never felt lost. Works perfectly as a standalone. Now to the story - Samantha meets Nick while in Las Vegas. You know what they say - what happens in Vegas!! However, circumstances arise that bring them back together. Nick lives in Alaska so Samantha goes to visit him (she's from San Francisco). Danger erupts during her visit putting her in all sorts of scary situations. Nick is a tough, former Ranger and police officer yet he is super kind and loving. I thought he was fantastic with Samantha. I have to say, Samantha annoyed me quite a bit. She seemed sweet and nice and kind yet she seemed to have written off any possiblity of a relationship with Nick, due to their home locations. She professed her love (at least to herself) but never once thought of a way to act on it. She seemed a bit selfish and shallow to me. The story also seemed to move a bit slow - there was a lot of time spent on the computer and doing some recon too. However, when there was action, it did get a bit intense. Overall, this was an ok read for me - I enjoyed it but was hoping for a bit more. (Received copy from NetGalley for honest review)
